Big Bear

Big Bear is a small community up in the mountains outside of San Bernadino. Most people that visit Big Bear visit for the skiing. They don't know what they are missing. There are several places to climb in the Big Bear area. We went up a very narrow dirt road to a place called The Pinnacles. There are several sport routes in this area and hopefully we will go back soon (although it is probably going to snow there soon) to check some more of them out.

The day we went up was a Tuesday that Dave and I both took off work. We couldn't have asked for a nicer day. There was really no wind, it was perfectly sunny, and it was about 75 degrees out. We managed to do 5 climbs in the few hours we were up there.

The one pictured below is a 5.8 route that we did first. I led and Dave cleaned. It was a nice climb with a great view. I would judge this climb to about 75 feet long. It is probably less.

This is a picture of Dave on top of the climb getting ready to clean it on the way down.

The picture below shows what I see when I am climbing. I think I am at the 4th clip but I might only be at the third.

After we finished this climb we hiked a little ways to a set of shorter climbs in the 40 foot range. We did 3 climbs on the same side of one rock. Some one thought it was a good idea to chop the first bolt so Dave used a small nut in a crack about 15 feet up and then did the rest of the sport route. Dave led 2 of the three climbs (I think, he may have led all three) and I TRed all three. Sorry there aren't realy any good pictures from this area.

For our final climb we went to the Tomb Stone. This is a nice 5.10b sport route and is about 60 feet long. Even though the rope goes straight up, the route starts to the left and moves to the right edge.

This is the view down from the top. The white dot in the middle of the shadow is Dave. I had to cheat on a move and really stuggle to get up this but I made it to the top. Dave cleaned on his way down in case I could not make it. I didn't want to leave his gear all over the climb.

Even after this busy day of climbing we still managed to drive home by 5:00 before sun went down which made both of our wives happy.
