Welcome to Fantasy Island
While in college, I decided it would be fun to work at a radio station. I got my FCC license and become the morning personality on KQAL, the campus radio station. I was on the air from 5:00 AM to 9:00 AM and mostly just entertained myself. Little did I know that this would be one of the best jobs ever. Not only did I get to meet some people who later become famous like Radiohead, I also put my self in the position for the ultimate summer job, working as a DJ on a cruise ship.
In the spring of '94 I decided to change majors from Engineering to ????. Since I was lost I answered an add in the school paper for cruise ship jobs. It kindof left my mind and I changed my major to Computer Science (I am now a computer geek extraordinare). 3 days into the spring quarter I recieved a phone call from Carnival Cruise Lines . The voice said "Can you be on a plane to Miami tomorrow". After thinking for about 1/1000000 of a second I said "Kay". Next thing I know I am driving all over campus telling everyone good bye. Most people didn't realize what I was telling them until several weeks later when I just wasn't around anymore. My room mate at the time was very confused.
That night we had a big brewhaha in a small dorm room. We had approximately 20 people in a room 10 feet x 8 feet. There were many flamable liquids served. Kristi vomited spagetti out her nose (not a good sight to see). Security came in and we toyed with him. Shane "disposed of the alcohol" down the sink at first, then he decided he better drink it instead. 5 minutes later he was vomiting into a garbage can. The worst part was that the can had a hole in the bottom. A few days later, everyone was called to the office to discuss the party. They all got work hours except me because I was "out of the country" as Shane told them.
The next day I went to the aiport, flew to Miami, stayed for one night, and then I met the ship in St. Thomas USVI. I was on a non stop 24/7 party from early March until late July. Below are some pictures and stories from my trip. Of course there are many more but that would fill a book.
The places I visisted are as follows:
Puerto Rico (I recommend Old San Juan or any remote part of the island)
St. Thomas (There are better places)
Guadalupe (All I have to say is French)
Grenada (Don't go here)
Aruba (I highly recommend, this is my favorite island)
Venezula (If you have been everywhere else, it is pretty cool)
Tortula (Beautiful but not much happening here)
British Virgin Gorda (A close second behind Aruba, check out the Bathes)
St. Lucia (Good Island for a good vacation, The pitons are cool)
Jamacia (I didn't like it, but alot of other people do)
Panama (cool if you are into engineering, I went through the canal 4 times)
Dominique (Plan on going to the mud volcano followed by a trip down the river, it's cool)
St. Johns (Like St. Thomas)
Curacao (Dutch like Aruba but not the same as Aruba. Still a very good island to visit)
Pictures
This is a picture of Angel's Falls. It is the highest waterfall in the world. I took a day trip there one day while I was in Venezula. It is a very interesting place. The rivers have parana, the bugs are HUGE, and you feel like you are in jurasic park.

This is a picture of me with the band from the ship. I just like this picture. I think we are in Curacao.

Here is a picture of me in the Bathes in Virgin Gorda. This is one of the funnest places on earth. There are above and below water caves formed from these giant bolders. Legend has it that the island was a volcano that basically exploded from too much pressure. The entire island is just a pile of boulders in the sea. It was about 125 degrees that day. I could feel my skin burning. We did some scuba diving and just had a great time. We had to take a small boat over from Tortula because our ship did not go to Gorda.

Here I am on the ship on one of my passages through the Panama Canal. It was interesting but I don't think I would pay to see it. It is completly self sustaining. It uses the water from the rain forest that it dams up to produce power. It also uses the water pressure to open and close the gates. It was designed to be just large enough for the QE2 to go through. It was the largest ship at the time. We only had 6 feet to spare and we were the second smallest carnival ship at the time.

This is a picture of the people I took my scuba lessons with in St. Thomas every week. Once I was certified, I dove for free in Aruba and got discounts at many other islands because I was a crew member. Sure beats getting certified in a pool.

Here I am in St. Lucia. We walked all the way up here to get a picture with the ship in the background.
