Goof Proof Roof
Bob showed me some pictures of this cool looking roof and I thought it looked like a lot of fun. It was Goof Proof Roof which is located just before the North Entrance of Josh.
We planned to head up there and stay 1 night during President's Day weekend. Bob picked me up about 6:45 on Saturday and we headed out. Below is a picutre of the area from the road. The roof is located on the formation in the center of the picture below. You can see the shadow a little.

The below is a close up picture from the road. You can really see the roof. It is about 25-30 feet wide and 60 feet long.

I had been sick with a cold and sinus infection for the last 2 weeks but felt pretty good on the hike up. I was taking medication for the infection which was really dehydrating me. I drank almost 1/2 gallon of water before even starting the climb. I led the first picth pictured below. The first placement was a nut that was actually left there by Bob 2 years ago when his partner couldn't get it out. The last placement before the first bolt was giving me some problems, but I finally passes it with an HB offset, those things are great. At the belay, the first signs of trouble showed up. It took me almost 5 tries to tie a figure 8 to fix the lead line. That is BAD. I have been tying that knot for almost 10 years and have done it thousands of times. Bob and I were both a little weary. I finally got it fixed an Bob started cleaning. He reclaimed his piece from 2 years ago and had some problems as my placements popped out. I shouldn't have been up there that day. When Bob got to the belay, I decided I would probably not be able to clean the roof so we fixed the static line and headed down thinking we would do the roof in the morning.

I snapped this picture of the roof before descending. The view is awesome.

Here are some pictures of Bob setting up his ledge for the night. You can see how large the roof is. The second pitch is directly above Bob on the smaller roof.

It was still the early afternoon. We grabbed something to eat and just sat around. The clouds started rolling in. I was feeling pretty sick. Nothing specific, just in general. We talked about our options for a while and we didn't want to take chances that I would be worse off tomorrow so we packed up and headed out. It was dark by this time and we were going by headlamp down the hill to the car. We couldn't find the trail in the dark so we just ad hoced our way out. On the way down it was pure torture. We couldn't see anything. Bob took a nasty fall but was alright. It looked pretty bad from where I was. His headlamp was shining in every direction. A little while later I stopped and barfed for about 5 minutes. Finally towards the bottom of the hill where the ground becomes flat, I fell and twisted my knee pretty bad. That wasn't the worst, I got pinned between a rock and a thorn bush. All I could see in my headlamp were twigs. Bob had to come help me back up. We finally made it back to the car in about 2 hours total, where I barfed again for 5 minutes. Finally we were on the road with no further problems.
Despite all the problems with this trip, I definitely want to go back and do the roof. I have been climbing for years and never gotten sick on a trip, I guess I was due.
