My First Time

As you can tell from the site, I am pretty adventurous and like to try new things. I had a mental list for some time of things I would like to do. Surfing was one of them. My wife, Kathie, got me some lessons for my birthday a year ago. I finally decided to take the lessons. I got in touch with Jim Miller over at Camp Surf. I met him down at Manhattan Beach at 7:15 Sunday morning. The group was Jim, me, and three girls. I was the only one that had never surfed before. Jim tossed me a wet suite and hooked me up with a 10 foot long board. We headed down to the sand where we practiced paddling and getting up on the board. Then it was in the water. I caught the first wave, stood up, and road it until I hit sand. I was shocked. I thought it would take a lot longer to catch a wave. For the next hour and a half, I caught waves and road most of them pretty well. With Jim's help, I figured out that I needed to stay toward the front of the board and stay low. I don't have any pics from this trip but I am sure I will surf again some day. It's high on my list of sports I like, along with hanggliding and, of course, climbing.
